HoMedics TotalClean 5-in-1 Air Purifier Reviews

(Also Known as the HoMedics HEPA Tower)

Photo of HoMedics TotalClean 5-in-1 Air PurifiersThe HoMedics TotalClean 5-in-1 air purifier in the top-of-the-line series by this company.

The major benefit that these HoMedics HEPA tower air purifiers offer is 360 degrees of air cleaning power.

Room air is drawn in on all sides of these air purifiers which makes them much more efficient than air cleaners that use a standard flat filter.

HoMedics offers three versions of the TotalClean 5-in-1 air purifier and each one offers great air filtration and useful features. However, the differences between each one can be hard to spot.

Those models include:

To help you make the right choice between these HoMedics Tower HEPA air cleaners, we’ll outline how these devices actually compare below with similarities and differences.

TotalClean 5-in-1 Similarities

No matter which model you choose—Large, Medium, or Small—you’ll enjoy these benefits:

  • Pre-filter — This traps the largest particles that pass through the system, like dirt, dust, and hair.
  • 360° HEPA Filter — This captures allergens, pollen, dust, smoke, pet dander, mold spores, and other airborne germs.
  • 360° Carbon Filter — This eliminates household odors, gases, and chemicals from the air around you.
  • UV-C Light — This destroys airborne bacteria and viruses by breaking apart their DNA structure; creating sterilized air that’s healthier to breathe.
  • Ionizer — This releases negative ions into the air to help boost the air cleaning power. It also makes it easier for the HEPA filter to capture the charged particle clumps.
  • Auto-Off Timer — This turns the air purifier off automatically after a set number of hours: 2, 4, 8, or 12 hours.
  • Night Light — If you like to use a night light while sleeping, this can replace your existing light.
  • Multiple Fan Speeds — You can adjust the air cleaning power to meet your individual needs from low to high.
  • Aroma Slot with 3 Pads — These air purifiers can deliver a fresh aroma into the air as it cleans it (aroma pads are included).
  • Replace Filter Indicator — This lets you know when it’s time to replace your air filter. The average time is around 12 months.

TotalClean 5-in-1 Differences

The differences between each model in this series are slight but well worth knowing:

  • True HEPA Filter vs HEPA-Type Filter
    • The Large and Medium 5-in-1 models include a True HEPA filter which captures up to 99.97% of pollutants down to 0.3 microns in size (the best type available).
    • The Small version uses a HEPA-Type filter which can only capture 99% of particles down to 2 microns (that’s 566% less efficiency).
  • Fan Speeds
    • The Large model has 4 fan speeds.
    • The Medium and Small models have 3 fan speeds.
    • This variation is fan speeds really isn’t that big of a deal for daily operation.
  • Particle Sensor and Auto Mode
    • The Large model has a particle sensor that detects the air quality levels in the room and automatically adjusts the fan speed to get rid of pollutants at a faster rate.
    • The Medium and Small models don’t have these features and must be adjusted manually.
  • Room Size Coverage — Each model is designed for a specific size room.
    • Large Model: 245 square feet (around a 24′ x 10′ room)
    • Medium Model: 185 square feet (around an 18 ‘ x 10’ room)
    • Small Model: 155 square feet (around a 15 ‘ x 10’ room)
  • Price — This varies by retailer, but you can expect about a $30-50 difference between the Large and Medium models and a $50-70 difference between the Medium and Small models. (Amazon often has the best price on these air purifiers.)

Our Recommendations

If you’re only interested in comparing the HoMedics TotalClean 5-in-1 air purifiers with each other and not against the other products listed on this page, then our recommendations are below. Otherwise, you’ll find our overall recommendations at the end of this guide.

  • Pick the model that meets or exceeds the total square footage of your room. You never want an air purifier that can’t handle the space it’s used in.
    • To measure the square footage (sq. ft.), multiply the width x the length (in feet).
    • For example, a 20′ x 10′ room = 200 sq. ft.
  • Choose the Medium size model over the Small one. If the Small model meets your square footage requirement, but you can afford the Medium one, buy that version instead. The Medium model has a much more advanced True HEPA filter that will capture finer microscopic particles.
  • Choose the Large model for hands-free operation. If you want an air purifier that automatically adjusts itself for you, get the Large model no matter what size room you have. The other two versions have to be manually adjusted and require more user involvement.

HoMedics Pet Plus Air Purifier Review

Photo of HoMedics Pet Plus Air PurifierOur HoMedics Pet Plus air purifier review is much simpler compared to the previous HoMedics TotalClean air purifier reviews.

Fortunately, this line of air purifiers only has one model for us to look at.

If you’re a pet owner of any kind (cats, dogs, birds, etc.), you’ll highly enjoy the HoMedics Pet Plus (AT-PET02) air purifier.

The advantage this device has over the 5-in-1 air purifier series is the inclusion of a dedicated PetPlus™ odor filter. This filter helps reduce the common odors that are associated with pets, such as dog smells, cat litter box odors, birdcage smells, etc.

So, if you want a pet air purifier that works for smaller rooms, this is a great choice.

As for the exact features you get, here’s a rundown of those benefits:

Pet Plus Air Purifier Features

  • Pre-filter — This traps dust, pet hair, and larger dander particles from clogging up the True HEPA filter.
  • True HEPA Filter — This captures 99.97% of ultrafine pet dander particles down to 0.3 microns (the smallest that matter).
  • PetPlus™ Odor Filter — This reduces odors that are emitted and left behind by your pets. It helps your home smell fresher by stripping those gaseous molecules out of the air.
  • Room Size Coverage — This device covers up to 188 sq. ft. which makes it ideal for smaller rooms in the home or placed right next to your pet’s bed or litter box.
  • Auto-Off Timer — You can set the air purifier to automatically turn off after 2, 4, 8, or 12 hours.
  • Oscillation — The air purifier’s fresh air fan can move back and forth to more evenly distribute clean air into the room.
  • 3 Fan Speeds — To let you control the level of air cleaning power.
  • Replace Filter Indicators — To alert you for when it’s time to replace the internal filters. The True HEPA filter lasts around 12 months while the PetPlus™ Odor filter is good for about 6 months.

All-in-all, the HoMedics Pet Plus Air Purifier offers everything you need to keep a cleaner and fresher-smelling home as a pet owner.

It’s not the most powerful air purifier HoMedics offers in regards to room size coverage but for keeping pet dander and odors under control, it’s the best choice.

As for price, it’s often found for around $200-230, but check Amazon for the current deal.

HoMedics True HEPA Air Purifier Reviews

Photo of HoMedics True HEPA Air PurifiersThe HoMedics True HEPA air purifier series includes two versions:

When you see the feature set below, you’ll discover that these models are a more basic version of the HoMedics 5-in-1 air purifier reviews at the beginning of this guide.

And, everything about these two air purifiers is practically identical, except for two details: the automatic timer and square footage coverage.

Here’s an explanation of similarities and differences:

True HEPA Air Purifier Similarities

  • Carbon Pre-filter — This is a dual-action filter that not only traps larger particles like dust, hair, and dirt but also acts as an odor neutralizer. The Activated Carbon that’s lined in this pre-filter traps household odors and smells to help your home smell fresher.
  • True HEPA Filter — This captures 99.97% of ultrafine particles down to 0.3 microns, such as allergens, pollen, dust, bacteria, mold spores, and particulate matter.
  • Night Light — An integrated night light can be turned on or off when you’re sleeping.
  • 3 Fan Speeds — You can manually control how fast the air purifier runs.
  • Replace Filter Indicators — To alert you for when it’s time to replace the internal filters. The True HEPA filter lasts around 12 months while the Carbon pre-filter is good for about 3 months.

True HEPA Air Purifier Differences

As for the differences between these two models in the HoMedics True HEPA air purifier series, you’ll find:

  • Auto-Off Timer — Only the Medium (AP-25) version has this function. You can set it to automatically turn off after 2, 4, 8, or 12 hours.
  • Room Size Coverage — Each model is designed for a specific size room.
    • Medium Model: 184 square feet (around a 18′ x 10′ room)
    • Small Model: 114 square feet (around an 11 ‘ x 10’ room)
  • Price — This varies by retailer, but you can expect about a $30-50 difference between the Medium and Small models. (Check Amazon for the current deals.)

Our Recommendations

If we’re only comparing the HoMedics True HEPA air purifiers with each other and not against the other products listed on this page, then here are our recommendations:

  • Buy the Medium Model if you can afford it. The price difference between the Medium and Small models is not that much and the Medium model gives you significantly more room size coverage for a relatively small cost. You can also have the device farther away from you and still enjoy clean air.
  • Choose the Small model for personal use. If you plan to place this air purifier next to you on a desk or table, then the room size coverage won’t matter as much. For personal use like this, you can save some money by getting the Smaller model.

HoMedics Desktop Air Purifier Review

Photo of HoMedics TotalClean Desktop Air PurifierThis is our final HoMedics air purifier review before we get to the more in-depth comparison of each model mentioned on this page.

The HoMedics TotalClean Desktop (AP-DT10) is a small air purifier that’s made specifically for personal use at home, the office, or while traveling.

It’s the cheapest product HoMedics offers, around $100 or so, and gives you basic air cleaning functions.

As for the exact features, you’ll get:

Desktop Air Purifier Features

  • Carbon Pre-filter — This is a dual-action filter that collects larger particles and neutralizes indoor odors.
  • HEPA-Type Filter — This is a lower quality version of a True HEPA filter and only captures 99% of particles down to 2 microns in size.
  • Ionizer — This releases negative ions into the air to help boost the air cleaning power. It also makes it easier for the HEPA filter to capture the charged particle clumps.
  • Auto-Off Timer — This turns the air purifier off automatically after a set number of hours: 2, 4, or 8 hours.
  • 3 Fan Speeds — You can manually control how fast the air purifier runs.
  • Replace Filter Indicators — To alert you for when it’s time to replace the internal filters. The HEPA-Type filter lasts around 12 months while the Carbon pre-filter is good for about 3 months.
  • Aroma Slot with 1 Pad — This air purifier can deliver a fresh aroma into the air as it cleans it (includes 3 pads).
  • Room Size Coverage — This device covers up to 124 sq. ft. which makes it ideal for small personal spaces at home or the office. It’s also a good size for traveling. The best use is when it’s placed a few feet from where you’re sitting.

If you want a small air purifier that you can take with you or you just have a small space to cover, this is a decent choice.

The only drawback is that this device doesn’t include a True HEPA filter, which is the most efficient, but rather a HEPA-Type filter.

This filter variation means this machine misses some of the microscopic contaminants such as finer dust, allergens, and bacteria. If you have allergies or asthma, we recommend that you buy one of the other models listed on this page (the TotalClean 5-in-1 or True HEPA versions) since they’re more efficient air purifiers.
