Air purifiers are becoming much more common in homes for a reason. They work to ensure the circulation of fresh, clean air, which is important for staying healthy. The fan system sucks in and circulates air through one or more filters as pollutants and particles are caught and clean air is expelled back out. Once you have your air purifier, where exactly should you place it for the best air quality? Should air purifier be on the floor? Is higher up better?

Believe it or not, there is actually a way to place it that is more efficient and safer than others. We will discuss the dos and don’ts of proper air purifier placement.

In What Room Should You Place Your Air Purifier?

An air purifier needs to be placed in a strategic location for optimal performance. Placing one near a source of pollution or far from certain electronic devices are just some of the important factors to understand. If you have a lightweight air purifier, then there should be no problem moving it from room to room, but if your air purifier is too heavy, then you need to consider the following:

Room Size

You should avoid placing a highly powerful air purifier in a room that is too small for it, because it can end up wasting your home’s energy. Even worse is placing a small air purifier in a very large room, otherwise you won’t get anything out of your air purifier. Be sure to always read the recommended room size for the air purifier.

Doorway Placement

If you can, try and place your air purifier near the front door or entryway. That way, it can act like a security guard and catch all unwanted airborne particles that attempt to enter your home. If you have cats, dogs, or lots of people that go in and out, front doorway placement is definitely the way to go.

Near Odor Source

If you have a place where odors tend to linger, like a cat litter box or trash receptacle, placing an air purifier near it will help stop the smell at the source. Some air purifiers have powerful enough filters to actually help eliminate odors completely.

Not Behind Furniture

Don’t try to hide your air purifier behind or underneath furniture. Air purifiers need to be able to intake all the air in the room and can’t do that properly if they’re surrounded by obstacles or put inside a close space like a closet. This could cause an air purifier’s performance to drop significantly.

Don’t Add Other Devices

An air purifier should never be in the same room as other air quality devices such as humidifiers and dehumidifiers. If the natural airflow is getting pulled or pushed in different directions by different devices, the purifier can’t work effectively. Additionally, don’t open windows while your air purifier is running. Dust, pollen, and other outdoor pollutants will rush through the window into the room and take away all the work your air purifier has done.

Should Your Air Purifier Be Placed High Or Low?

Once you know which room you’ll be placing your air purifier in, it is important to know whether to place it on the floor or up higher. The rule of thumb is to set one up somewhere between 3 to 5 feet off the floor. This should give enough space for the air purifier to cleanse the air and provide comprehensive coverage. If an air purifier is placed on the floor, it will still work, however the results will not be optimal. The airflow can get much more restricted the lower it is to the floor.
